Community Internship
During the summer of 2017 Amy and I noticed that there was an unfortunate growing trend in opioid addiction within our county. In trying to decide on a topic for my internship, I did not want to work on something that would not have an impact on my community. Amy and I learned of the Hope Initiative located in Nashville, NC. The Hope Initiative is a not for profit organization by a parent who lost her son to an opioid overdose. The Hope Initiative works to place any addict within a rehabilitation facility. The Nashville Police Department works directly with The Hope Initiative. Amy and I worked with Chief Thomas Bashore, Nashville, Police Department.
Completing the Community Internship helped me gain a stronger sense of what was occurring within the community in which I live, and the students I lead come from on a daily basis. Addiction is a crisis that many have been forced to deal with if not at a personal level, Seeing how my community is taking a proactive approach in working with addiction and people/families it affects is rewarding.
